"Mai Gei Wong" Mr. Huang Hu Fang
Huang Hufang (1929-1998) was born in Dabu Village, Sanshui County, Guangdong Province. From a young age, under the influence of his father Huang Bodong, he practiced thirteen Southern style martial arts. In his youth, he also learned Western boxing with the Russian Colingo and also practiced weightlifting and fitness with Tan Wenbiao. In the early 1960s, Mr. Huang Hufang became a disciple of Master Huang Zhen, the fourth generation descendant of the Lu Jin lineage of Foshan Wing Chun Boxing, and completed his seven year career. Later, he learned from Master Cenneng, combined the achievements of the two schools, and combined the essence of the boxing skills of the northern and southern schools to create the "King of Rice Machine" Wing Chun Boxing.
Under the leading of Mai Gei Wong, his apprentices and him won 300 and more martial
arts contests successively, HuangHuFang also donated an airplane during “the great steel”
and became the champion of the boxing contest . After that, he gave classes in public in
Guangzhou, which earned him lots of apprentices, the boxing techniques he taught was
mainly concerned with the actual combat and famous for its characteristic of fierce and
tough. In the 50s and 60s of the last century, HuangHuFang arose the attention of people
little by little, and in the 70s, this legendary figure who is adept with both the pen and
the sword won his name in Guangzhou.
Mr.Huang, who is of civil and military was the business graduate of the first session
in Sun Yet sun university after the establishment of the new China. With his experience
of chaos caused by war, he mingled various essences of different schools and art of war
in ancient times in Mai Gei Wong Wing Chun. Mr.Huang adhered to the principle of
allinclusive mind and blazing new trails in a pioneering spirit, which made Wing Chun
spread from mouth to mouth in the 70s and 80s of Guangdong. And then he moved from
Xiguan to Tianhe district in 1988 and brought Wing Chun to Tianhe and stroke roots there.
In his twilight years, Mr.Huang devoted all his attention in teaching his
sons and daughters combining the traditional teaching method of Wing Chun and his own
experiences of martial arts, and his eldest son, Huang Nimyi, reaping all his father’s benefits.
Mai Gei Wong is the nick name of HuangLuFang, in the period when the intellectuals was
delegated to factories, Mr.Huang was assigned as the accountant of the Henan food processing
factory of Guangzhou, in which the most valuable thing was the rice husking machine ( pronounces
Mai Gei in Cantonese),therefore, some martial artists gave him the nick name as Mai Gei Wong.
However, most martial artist did form stereotype towards Wing Chun, some even made the
demagoguery that Wing Chun is just showy but not practical martial arts only fit for women.
Concerning about these vicious slander, Mr.Huang thought he was obligated to clarify Wing Chun,
which is the high level martial arts yet distorted as some useless thing.For maintaining the fame
of Wing Chun, he must stand out to defeat the vile rumor monger by Wing Chun, dispelling those
rumor by his victory.
After appreciating the extraordinary skills of Wing Chun, the martial artists were greatly widened
their horizon. They wondered who this Wing Chun ace was, so asking for Mr.Huang’s name. Yet,
Mr.Huang was not seeking for fame,and out of the concern the lawenforcing departmentwould
misunderstandhis behavior and do harm to his family and himself, he left without answering their
question. There were some bystanders recognized him was Mai Gei Huang who worked in the Henan
food processing factory,yet mistook Huang as Wong ( the same pronunciation in Cantonese).
Mai Gei Wong made a name for himself after that with endless stream of challengers came for
him. And his name became even more popular as never being defeated. More and more people
requested him to open a martial school for teaching people Wing Chun, and for sure, there were
also some people want to stop Mr. Huang, including some radical
people of other schools who even intervened him with law-enforcing department.
Nevertheless, Mr.Huang always sighed with emotion in his in his descending year because he
failed to promote Wing Chun in china even though the name “Mai Gei Wong” means invincible at
that time. HuangHuFang, who didn’t want throw what he’d learned into the flowing water, leaving
the hope of carrying Wing Chun forward to his children.
Mr.Huang passed away in 1998 at his age of 71. At the same year, his son, Huang Nimyi,realized
his dream of promoting Wing Chun and named “Mai Gei Wong” Foshan Wing Chun as“Mai Gei Wong”
officially, and hung the shop sign on the Wing Chun learning center in Tianhe. For the past 19 years,
Mai Gei Wong has flourished and transferred the conception of Wing Chun all over the world.
